TOP 5 FREE BLOGGING PLATFORMS

There are many blogging platforms available. Out of them, five well known popular examples are:

Blogger

WordPress.com

Wix

Tumblr

Medium

Out of these Five free blogging platforms, Blogger and wordpress.com are very popular. However, you can choose any platform out of the above five.

My recommendation to the starters is the first two blogging platforms:

Blogger.com and wordpress.com.

Out of these two, Blogger is highly preferable for the starters because it has plenty of earning options through free blog itself.

COMMON NEGATIVE FEATURE OF ALL THE FREE BLOGGING SITES

Since these blogging platforms are offered free of cost, they always have the risk of getting withdrawn or charged if the promoters find the running of the blogging platform financially not feasible.  Therefore it is advised to keep the periodical back ups of your works always in your system or pen drive or internet storage facilities like Google’s Drive. However we can expect from the blog promoters that they will definitely give us the option to take the back up of our blog or to transfer it to some other platforms if they propose to close their blogging platform. Therefore it is not a point of panic.

Now let us see the positive and negative features of all these five platform:

(1) BLOGGER (www.blogger.com)

PROS:

(i) The easiest platform for blogging.

(ii) Simple interface / dashboard from where you can control and run even hundreds of blogs.

(iii) All the basic settings, themes and layout options are available.

(iv) A nice feature I like the most in blogger is its ease of navigation.  For example, if you are in the “Basic settings” page in Blog-A and you switch to another Blog-B, you are taken to the same “Basic settings” Page of Blog-B. This helps to make similar changes in many blogs through easy switching.

(v) Highly secured platform powered by all the security features of Google.  You need not worry about the security of the blog and hence you can sleep peacefully during night time.

(vi) The ONLY FREE BLOGGING PLATFORM THAT OFFERS SO MUCH OF EARNING OPTIONS EVEN THROUGH ITS FREE BLOGS by way of ADSENSE – the advertisement network of Google, our own ads and affiliate links.  No other free blog platform offers this facility.  Many blogging advisers do not primarily highlight this feature since there is no earning for them if they recommend blogger since it is a free platform. Since I write only what I felt after experiencing it, I primarily highlight this feature though I do not gain anything from blogger for recommending it for starters.

(vii) You can use Blogger even if you grow until you do not violate their terms because even popular websites like TWITTER uses blogger free platform for their blogs.

(viii) It also gives RSS sharing and basic Social Media Sharing and AUTO SHARING Features.

(ix) It does not require even a single dollar of expenses to start blogging and has no torturing self advertising.

(x) Limited additional CSS adding options to make the blog as beautiful as possible. One such example for the blogger blog from me with some css additions can be seen here: www.newsreviewdaily.in.

(xi) In general in my view and experience, blogger is the very decent – unconditional- hassle free  blogging platform, if you are looking for a free blogging platform.

Therefore, though it has no access to the third party plugins, Blogger offers all the required basic features.

CONS:

(i) If you compare with Self hosted wordpress (wordpress.org), Blogger has limited features because of the absence of third party plugins. However, it gives all the important features more than expected from a free blogging platform.

(ii) Limited sets of templates and no availability of highly featured third party templates.  However for basic blogging, the available templates are sufficient.

(iii) Limited support directly.  However, there are active Blogger forums from where we can get solution to any problem we face.

(iv) Updating speed for the blogging features is slow compared to the outdating speed.

(v) We are not the owner of our blog and hence the risk of getting suspended at any time if we violate the rules or if they find the free platform viable to continue.

HOWEVER, THE CONS ARE JUST SMALL COMPARED TO THE PROS. THEREFORE BLOGGER CAN BE YOUR BEST CHOICE FOR STARTING BLOGGING.

(2) WORDPRESS.COM (www.wordpress.com)

This should not be confused with the wordpress.org. The website www.wordpress.org offers the wordpress software to download and use as we wish in our paid hosting accounts.

Whereas, wordpress.com offers instant – readymade – already hosted blogging platform using the same wordpress software but, with limited features.

PROS:

(i) Similar to blogger in many features, but, have more template options and Layout options.

(ii) Easy to use.

(iii) No need for setting up pains.  Instantly available.

(iii) Like Blogger, all the basic settings, themes and layout options are available.

(iv) Highly secured platform powered by all the security features of wordpress  You need not worry about the security of the blog and hence you can sleep peacefully during night time.

CONS:

(i) All Time Storage is limited to 2 GB for free platform.

(ii) If you need additional features and storage, you need to pay some fee that is variable according to our requirements.  These updated details can be found in the website www.wordpress.com even while starting a new blog

(iii) The most important negative aspect of worddpress.com is that it does not offer any earning opportunities.

(iv) We are not the owner of our blog and hence the risk of getting suspended at any time if we violate the rules or if they find the free platform viable to continue.

(3) WIX (www.wix.com)

PROS:

(i) Easy to set up using drag and drop builder.

(ii) You can use variety of templates for a professional look including One Page Templates..

(iii) Option to grow our website and business with powerful web Apps and services.

(iv) Our website will have amazing look on any device. Option to get a mobile version of our site in just one click.

(v) Option for using a custom domain for a cost.

(vi) Image editor.

(vii) Image galleries and stock images.

(viii) Social buttons.

CONS:

(i) Free hosted blog has the advertisements and links by Wix. We should pay a cost to remove them.

(ii) All features including templates, social, etc, are limited for free plans and reserved for premium plans.

(4) TUMBLR (www.tumblr.com)

PROS:

(i) Tumblr is best suited for microblogging instead of long stories.  Seven post types to get you started such as short stories, photos, GIFs, TV shows, links, quips, dumb jokes, smart jokes, Spotify tracks, mp3s, videos, fashion, art, deep stuff, etc.

(ii) Tumblr has more than 372 million different blogs, filled with literally whatever.

(iii) Easy to find and follow blogs of your choice, and for the other people find and follow ours.

(iv) Similar to microblogging sites, once you follow a blog, all of its posts show up in your dashboard, just like you would expect. You can also add commentary if you like. You can make a post your own. Other people will also do the same to our posts.

(v) Custom domain and third party themes can also be used by purchasing them.

CONS:

(i) Limited features since it is free.

(ii) Since it is more than a blog but a microblogging platform, preserving the database and transferring to other platforms in the case of the suspension of our account will be impossible.

(iii) Monetization with our choice of ads is impossible.

(5) MEDIUM (www.medium.com)

PROS:

(i) Used more by writers, journalists, bloggers, etc in the field of Technology culture politics, business, life, etc, and connect with each other.

(ii) Easy to use and to connect with the similar thinkers, writers, etc.

(iii) Social media options.

(iv) No designing skills required and no need for making any program changes.

CONS:

(i) Monetization through our advertisements is impossible.

(ii) Similar to Tumblr, preserving the database and transferring to other platforms in the case of the suspension of our account will be impossible.

(iii) Limited features for free users.  Upgradation options are also available for a cost.

CONCLUSION

Tumblr and Medium are mainly for building a community and other three are mainly for blogging purpose.

Therefore, Tumblr will be best suited if you like to have a mix of short blogging with community building.

For blogging with all the essential features, blogger is the best.

The above comparison and suggestions are for free platforms only.

As far as Self hosted blogs and fast growing blogs and for independent usage with no conditions (except the rules of lands), undoubtedly wordpress.org will be the best that is explained in another post.
